    In Memoriam

    Robert McAfee, MD

Former President of the American Medical
    Association, Retired Surgeon
    Maine Medical Center

On behalf of everyone at Lunder-Dineen, we express our sympathy to the family and friends of Dr. Bob McAfee. We mourn the loss of a valued and respected member of our Advisory Committee and staunch supporter of Lunder-Dineen.

His surgical career showed him the value of each of our programs, but he had a particular interest in the Time To Ask program. Dr. McAfee had a steadfast commitment to healthcare and took on numerous leadership roles in his life. He was a strong and thoughtful voice in Maine and across the country.

    What Time to Ask

    Means to Me

    Resources for Organizations

on the Front Lines of Community Health

In January 2024, patients at two locations of the Greater Portland Health care system (GPH) started self-screening for symptoms of unhealthy alcohol use. Lunder-Dineen provided iPads so patients can complete the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) as part of the intake process. We expect this easy-to-use tool to yield more routine screening along with more accurate responses with the intention of better overall health outcomes. Phase Two of this pilot will evaluate the process and expand.

Three-question test only takes about one minute to complete

All answers are completely confidential for use by healthcare providers only

Materials are in multiple languages to better serve the diverse Portland population

    Education on

    Motivational Interviewing

In 2023, Lunder-Dineen launched the fourth iteration of its course Foundations of Motivational Interviewing (MI). This free learning opportunity is part of Time to Ask and educates healthcare providers about MI and why it is an essential skill. This two-part program offers context followed by live, virtual drop in practice sessions where attendees can practice their skills with colleagues and peers from across the health care community.

All learners complete an initial, easy to use, 30-minute web-based online module

Then they can register to be part of an interactive, peer-to-peer learning community to practice MI skills in real-world scenarios

Lunder-Dineen collaborated with the Health Education Training Institute (HETI) to develop this course

    Why is Primary Care

the Ideal Place for an Intervention?

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening for unhealthy alcohol use in adults age 18+, including pregnant people, in primary care settings

Primary care settings are often the only place many people receive health care guidance, especially in rural areas

Evidence shows that screening and interventions in primary care settings are effective at decreasing alcohol use and simply cutting back use can improve overall health
