Robert McAfee, MD

Dr. Robert McAfee served as an attending surgeon at Maine Medical Center and chief of surgery and vascular surgery at Mercy Hospital for decades before becoming the first Maine doctor to serve as president of the American Medical Association. In this highly influential role, McAfee succeeded in getting the AMA to view family violence and handgun violence as medical health issues, and in doing so fundamentally shifted the larger, national conversation. McAfee is a founding member of Maine Citizens Against Handgun Violence, and a Trustee Emeritus of the University of New England, and he served as chairman of the Advisory Council to the Partnership for Tobacco-Free Maine from 1997 through 2001. He is the recipient of countless awards.
