James B. Hanley, DMD

James B. Hanley, DMD is a native of Worcester, Massachusetts, who attended public elementary schools in Shrewsbury and graduated from Assumption Preparatory School in Worcester. After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Natural Sciences at Assumption College, he matriculated to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and was awarded a DMD upon successful completion of his studies.

Dr. Hanley practiced General Dentistry in Worcester before returning to Tufts and completing a residency program in Periodontology. Subsequently, he opened a full-time private practice, limited to Periodontology, in Concord, Massachusetts, and began working part-time as a Clinical Instructor at Tufts. Over the years, he gradually increased his commitment to teaching and rose to the rank of Associate Professor. He also served in a number of administrative roles, including Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Chair ad interim of the Department of Periodontology, and Director of Periodontal Clinic Administration. He is a recipient of the Tufts University Provost’s Award for Teaching and Service.

Jim is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a graduate of the American Dental Education Association Leadership Institute. He is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Education Association, the American Dental Association and the Maine Dental Association. Dr. Hanley also serves as a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation and on the board of directors of the Eastern Dentists Insurance Company. In addition, he is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, and the Academy of Dental Sciences, and he is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society.

After rowing for four years during college, Dr. Hanley served as the Head Rowing Coach at Assumption College for three years. He is a long-term member of Riverside Boat Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, having served as both the President and a Trustee of the club. Jim still competes locally and nationally, including in the Head of the Charles and USRowing Masters Nationals regattas.

The father of three daughters and grandfather of four, Dr. Hanley currently resides in Portland, Maine, with his wife, Marian.
